ABOUT ME
SYLVIA JULIANA RIVEROS
Sylvia Juliana Riveros is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist, sociologist, and educator born and raised in Colombia and based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work explores social and climate justice issues through documentary photography and film, drawing, creative writing, and public art.
With over 7 years of professional experience, Sylvia is committed to community-based approaches that transform concern into action. She designs participatory, future-oriented workshops, emphasizing affirmative approaches to envisioning alternative futures. Grounded in ecofeminism and Participatory Action Research (PAR), her work bridges artistic expression, ancestral knowledge, and community engagement.
Sylvia’s recent works have been exhibited in Manhattan, NY, including Remember, Recognize, and Recover (2023); which is also winning of the Mincultura award, and Toñita’s NYC (2023) a photojournalism series about the oldest caribbean club in NYC. Also Introito (2014) that won the award Chronicle on the daily life of Bogota, provided by Idartes (Colombia), and it was exhibited at Bogota Museum of Modern Art (MAMBO).
Sylvia holds a master's degree in XE: Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement from New York University (NYU). An advanced diploma in Photo Narrative and New Media in Mexico, awarded by the World Press Photo. A Certificate Program in Documentary Photography and a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology with a major in Visual Arts.
